This Bird Box is made to Glastir standards, including a metal plate around the entrance hole to protect from woodpeckers and squirrels.
Bird boxes will be supplied with a 25mm hole unless other is specified at checkout.
Our Bird boxes are made from rough sawn pressure treated softwood, which means they don’t need any further treatment from you and are ready to be sited. We do not use Chromated Copper Arsenate pressure treated timber.
The timber we use is 25mm thick which gives excellent strength and insulation. There are drainage holes in the bottom of the box. The lids are easily removed by the removal of 3 stainless steel screws. All bird boxes have an entrance hole of 25mm to suit blue, coal and marsh tits, however boxes with other sized holes can be supplied for not extra cost. Bird boxes are supplied with a metal plate fitted to the entrance hole to protect from woodpeckers and squirrels at no extra cost.
Typical hole sizes:
25mm for blue, coal and marsh tits
28mm for great tits, tree sparrows and pied flycatchers
32mm for house sparrows and nuthatches
For most of the species listed, boxes may be positioned at heights of between 1.2 and 5 metres on either trees or buildings. Convenience for inspection (where necessary) should be carefully assessed in the light of the need to protect boxes from human or predator interference.
Strap box to tree or use headless or domed aluminium nails (less damaging to saws and chipping machinery) which are not fully hammered home as this allows the tree to push the box off without splitting.
Care should be taken to shelter boxes from prevailing wind, rain and strong sunlight. An entrance facing somewhere between North and East is best.
